Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You drive on a city street at 30 mph. Ahead, an older man walks unsteadily toward the curb in the middle of the block, far from any crosswalk. He looks as if he may step into the street. What should you do?
Blue car A travels toward an older man B at the curb, away from a crosswalk. The man has an unsteady gait.
Correct answer: Slow down, cover the brake, and be ready to stop if he steps out.
Why
The manual says that young, elderly, disabled and impaired pedestrians are the most frequent victims of crashes between cars and pedestrians. Your duty of care applies everywhere, not only at crosswalks. When a person may enter the street, lower your speed early, because at a lower speed you need less distance to stop.
