Regulatory, Lane & Parking SignsStandalone practice
You drive on an interstate. Signs along the shoulder read EMERGENCY STOPPING ONLY. Your passenger wants you to stop so that you can both check a map. The car has no problem. What should you do?

Correct answer: Drive on to an exit or a rest area, and stop in a safe place there.
Why
A car that stops on the interstate, even on the shoulder, is in great danger from high-speed traffic. If your vehicle does break down, move to the right shoulder as soon as you can, turn on the hazard flashers, and stay in or near the vehicle on the side away from traffic. Plan your route before the trip, so that you do not need to stop to check a map.
