Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You drive on a rural section of interstate at 70 mph. The day is clear and the road is dry. What following distance does the Tennessee manual advise?
A follows silver B in the right lane of a dry rural interstate at 70 mph. A roadside post provides a fixed reference point; no time or distance interval is marked.
Correct answer: At least 4 seconds behind the vehicle ahead
Why
At 70 mph a car travels about 100 feet each second, so each extra second of gap gives you about 100 more feet to see a problem and brake. To check your gap, note when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point and count the seconds until you reach it. On the interstate, also look 15 to 20 seconds ahead for brake lights and merging traffic.
