Passing target: 80% (32/40)
You drive in the right lane of a four-lane interstate, two lanes in each direction. Ahead, a Highway Patrol car with flashing lights is stopped on the right shoulder. The left lane is clear. What must you do?
A is in the right lane of a divided four-lane interstate. Patrol B is fully on the right shoulder with a flashing lamp; the left lane is empty.
Correct answer: Check your mirror, signal, and move into the left lane before you pass the patrol car.
Why
Officers, tow operators and road crews are hurt every year by drivers who pass too close. If a lane change is not safe, slow down and keep a safe speed as you pass. Tennessee applies the same rule to tow trucks, utility and highway maintenance vehicles, and any stopped vehicle with its flashing lights on.
