Passing target: 80% (32/40)
On a two-lane road, you come up behind a bicyclist. An oncoming car is near. If you pass now, you can leave only about 2 feet between your car and the bicycle. What should you do?
Blue car A follows cyclist B on a two-lane road as car C approaches; a pass now would leave only 2 feet.
Correct answer: Slow down behind the rider until you can pass with at least 3 feet.
Why
A bicyclist can swerve suddenly to miss a pothole, trash or an opening car door, so a close pass leaves no margin. After the oncoming car goes by, move over, pass slowly, and keep the 3-foot space until you are well past the rider. If the street is too narrow for a safe pass, wait until there is room.
