Passing target: 80% (32/40)
On a dry state highway with a moderate speed limit, the car ahead passes a road sign. You count "one-thousand-one," and your front bumper reaches the sign before you can say "one-thousand-two." What should you do?
Blue A reaches the fixed road sign before the count reaches two after silver B passed it.
Correct answer: Slow down a little until the gap is two seconds or more.
Why
The two-second count gives you time to see a problem ahead and react before you reach the vehicle in front. Pick a fixed point, such as a sign or a pole, and start the count when the vehicle ahead passes it. Tailgating causes most rear-end crashes and also blocks your view of the road ahead, so fix a short gap by easing off the gas, not by braking hard.
