Your car stalls on a railroad crossing and will not restart. You hear a horn and see a train coming toward the crossing from your left. What should you do?
Blue A is stalled across both rails of a railroad crossing and faces north. Locomotive B approaches from A’s left, heading east. An exact U.S. crossbuck identifies the crossing. No people outside the car, escape route, pushing action or response instruction appears.
Correct answer: Get everyone out and move away from the tracks, toward the train and to the side
Why
A train needs a very long distance to stop, and it cannot steer around your car. When it hits the car, metal and glass fly forward in the direction the train moves, so you move toward the train and away from the tracks at an angle. When everyone is safe, call the emergency number on the blue Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign at the crossing and give the crossing number on that sign.
