Passing target: 70% (28/40)
Red lights flash at a railroad crossing as you approach, so you must stop. Which stopping point is lawful?
Blue A approaches a railroad crossing from well back on a two-way road. A red warning lamp is active on the right-side crossing signal. No stopping distance is marked.
Correct answer: About 30 feet before the nearest rail
Why
The 15-foot minimum keeps your car clear of a train, which is wider than the rails. The 50-foot maximum keeps you close enough to see the tracks and the signals. You must also stop in this zone when a flagger warns of a train, or when a train that sounds its horn about 1,500 feet away is close enough to be a hazard.
