Passing target: 70% (28/40)
You drive on a five-lane street: two lanes each way and a center left-turn lane between them. A school bus that comes from the other direction stops across from you and turns on its alternately flashing red lights. What must you do?
A street has two westbound lanes, two eastbound lanes and a painted center left-turn lane, with no physical median. Yellow school bus B is stopped westbound with red warning lamps flashing. Blue A approaches in the opposing outside lane, well before the answer stopping position. No stop mark or response instruction appears.
Correct answer: Stop before you reach the bus, because a center turn lane does not divide the road
Why
Texas requires drivers from both directions to stop for a school bus that shows alternately flashing red lights. You do not have to stop only when the bus is on a separate roadway, divided by a median, a barrier or a section built to keep traffic apart, or when it is in a loading zone of a controlled-access highway where people may not cross. Paint and a center turn lane do not make separate roadways, so all traffic stops and waits.
