In a highway work zone, a flagger in an orange vest turns a paddle toward you that reads STOP. The lane ahead of you looks empty. What should you do?
Blue A approaches an orange-vest flagger B, who faces the car with an exact STOP paddle on a pole. A labelled enlarged detail shows the same worker and sign face. The lane beyond B is empty. A is well before its answer stopping position; no response route, stop line or wait instruction is shown.
Correct answer: Stop in your lane and stay stopped until the flagger signals you to go
Why
A flagger often controls a place where one lane must serve both directions, so oncoming cars may soon use the lane that looks empty. Stop in your lane and go only when the flagger turns the paddle to SLOW or waves you on, then drive with care and look for vehicles in your lane. In Texas, fines for traffic offenses double in a work zone when workers are present.
