Your side of the road has two lanes, and you see this sign. What should you do?

A white vertical rectangle sign with a black border that reads KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS in black letters.
  1. AStay in the right lane unless you are passing.

  3. CDrive in the lane that has the least traffic.
  4. DKeep to the right of the island or divider ahead.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: A. Stay in the right lane unless you are passing.

Why

This regulatory sign is used where your direction has two lanes. Drive in the right lane. Move to the left lane to pass a slower vehicle, then return to the right lane when it is safe. Do not mix it up with the Keep Right symbol sign, which tells you which side of an island or obstruction to pass.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • B. The sign keeps the right lane for normal driving, so you pass in the left lane.
  • C. The sign tells you which lane to use; you do not pick a lane by how busy it is.
  • D. Passing an island on its right is what the Keep Right symbol sign directs; this sign is about lane use.
