U.S. Road Signs

Regulatory, Lane & Parking Signs

You see this sign as you drive. What does it mean?

A white square sign with a black left-turn arrow under a red circle and a red diagonal slash.
  1. ALeft turns are allowed, but you must yield to oncoming traffic.
  2. BThe road ahead bends sharply to the left.
  3. CThe left lane is closed ahead, so move to the right lane.
  4. DYou may not turn left at the intersection ahead.
Show the answer and the explanation

Correct answer: D. You may not turn left at the intersection ahead.

Why

A red circle and slash over a black arrow means that the movement shown is not allowed. This sign means no left turn at the intersection from your approach. Go straight or turn right instead, if other signs do not ban those moves too. Do not mix it up with a yellow diamond that shows a bent arrow: that sign warns of a curve or turn in the road and does not ban anything.

Why the other answers are not correct

  • A. Wrong: the red circle and slash mean that the left turn is not allowed; you yield to oncoming traffic only where a left turn is allowed.
  • B. Wrong: a curve or turn ahead is shown on a yellow diamond warning sign.
  • C. Wrong: a lane closure is shown on a warning sign; this regulatory sign is about a turn at the intersection.
