Correct answer: C. Come to a full stop, and then go when it is safe.
Why
A red octagon with the word STOP means you must come to a full stop. Stop at the stop line if there is one. If there is none, stop before the crosswalk or before you enter the cross road. Then yield to traffic and pedestrians, and go only when it is safe. Do not confuse it with the yellow Stop Ahead sign, which only warns that a STOP sign is farther down the road.
Why the other answers are not correct
- A. Wrong: a STOP sign requires a full stop; slowing without a stop is what a YIELD sign can allow.
- B. Wrong: stopping does not give you the right-of-way; you must still wait until it is safe to go.
- D. Wrong: this is the STOP sign itself; the yellow Stop Ahead warning sign is the one that warns of a STOP sign farther ahead.
