You start to back out of a parking space in a busy lot. A car comes down the aisle behind you, and a shopper walks toward the rear of your car. What should you do?
Blue A faces into a parking space with its rear at the aisle. Silver car B comes along the aisle behind A, and shopper C walks toward A’s rear. The card states that A starts backing in a busy lot.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the car and the shopper pass, then check again and back out
Why
Utah law lets a driver back up only when the movement can be made safely and without interfering with other traffic. A driver who backs out of a space sees little behind the vehicle, so that driver must wait for cars in the aisle and for people on foot. Before you get in, look behind the vehicle, because from the driver's seat you cannot see small children or low objects. Back slowly and keep looking to the rear until you stop.
