Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You pass your freeway exit by about 100 feet. The right shoulder is empty, and no cars are close behind you. Which statement about backing up to the exit ramp is correct?
Blue car A is in the right of two freeway lanes beside an empty paved shoulder. The card says A passed its exit by about 100 ft; the missed exit is behind the shown view, and no car follows nearby.
Correct answer: Backing is not allowed on the shoulder or on the travel lanes of a freeway
Why
On a limited-access roadway, such as a freeway or an interstate, Utah law does not let a driver back up on the shoulder or on the roadway. Freeway traffic moves fast, and drivers do not expect a vehicle to move backward, so a crash can happen in seconds. Emergency vehicles also use the shoulder to get to crashes. If you miss an exit, drive on to the next exit and come back by a lawful route.
