You are about to drive down a long, steep mountain grade in a car with an automatic transmission. What should you do before the descent starts?
A generic automatic selector has five equally styled positions: P, R, N, D and L. The card states that a long, steep mountain descent is about to begin.
Correct answer: Shift to a lower gear and slow to a safe speed before you go down
Why
Gravity makes a vehicle speed up on a downgrade. A lower gear lets the engine help hold the speed, so the brakes do not overheat and lose their power. Do not coast downhill in neutral or with the clutch pressed in, because you lose that engine braking. If a sign shows a speed limit or a safe speed for the grade, do not go faster than that speed.
