Freeway traffic stops because of a crash ahead. Some drivers use the paved area outside the solid white edge line. Which use of that area is permitted?
A traffic queue occupies two freeway lanes, with blue car A in the right lane. Silver car F is on the paved shoulder beyond the solid white line. The card says a crash has stopped traffic ahead.
Correct answer: Stopping on it because your car has a flat front tire
Why
On a freeway, the area outside the solid white edge line is for emergency use only. You may pull onto it when your vehicle breaks down or you are in physical distress, but you may not drive on it to pass traffic or stop on it to pick up passengers. Emergency vehicles use this area to reach crashes, and a vehicle stopped there without need can be hit. If you must stop there, move as far right as you can and turn on your hazard lights.
