The METER ON sign at a freeway on-ramp is lit. You are the second car in line at the ramp signal. The light turns green, and the car in front of you goes. What should you do?
Blue car A is second in an eastbound ramp queue, well behind the stop line. Silver car B has just passed the line on the lower green lamp; an inset shows the illuminated METER ON sign at the ramp entrance.
Correct answer: Move up to the stop line and wait there for your own green light
Why
A ramp meter is a signal with only red and green lights on a freeway on-ramp. Unless a sign shows a different number, one vehicle may go on each green light. Ramp meters space out merging vehicles so that freeway traffic flows more smoothly. When the METER ON sign at the start of the ramp is dark, the meter is off and you enter the freeway in the usual way.
