You approach a work zone. The traffic signal ahead is green, but a flagger holds a STOP paddle toward your lane. What should you do?
Blue A approaches a flagger holding a STOP paddle toward A's lane. Enlarged details show that paddle and a traffic signal with its bottom green lamp lit. The road beyond the flagger is empty.
Correct answer: Stop well back from the flagger, and wait until the flagger signals you to go ahead
Why
Flaggers often control one lane that traffic from both directions must share. If you go before the flagger signals, you can meet traffic from the other direction head-on or hit workers who are hidden by equipment. Watch for the orange signs that warn of a work zone, slow down early and be ready to stop.
