Passing target: 80% (40/50)
Traffic is stopped just past a railroad crossing with one track. The gap between the far rail and the last car in the line is about 18 feet. Your car is 16 feet long. The gate arms are up. What should you do?
A approaches a single-track crossing with its gate raised and warning lights dark. A queued silver car is 18 feet past the far rail. The card says A is 16 feet long. A approaches the stop line.
Correct answer: Wait behind the stop line until there is room for your car and the train's overhang
Why
Never stop on the tracks. Trains cannot stop quickly: after emergency braking, a freight train at 55 mph needs more than a mile to stop. Before you start across, make sure that the traffic past the tracks leaves room for your whole vehicle with some extra space. This rule also applies at TRAX light rail crossings.
