Passing target: 80% (40/50)
A motorcycle rides near the left side of your lane ahead of you. The lane looks wide enough for your car to pass the motorcycle without leaving the lane. What should you do?
Blue car A follows motorcycle B in the right lane of a highway with two lanes in each direction. B rides near the left side of A’s lane.
Correct answer: Move to the next lane to pass, as you would to pass a car
Why
Utah law gives a motorcycle the full use of a lane, and no driver may operate a vehicle in a way that takes part of that lane away. A rider moves within the lane to avoid potholes, gravel, wet spots and wind, so a car that squeezes past in the same lane leaves no room for error. Motorcycles are small and hard to see, so check your mirrors and blind spots for them. When you follow a motorcycle, keep at least a two-second gap.
