Passing target: 80% (40/50)
On a freeway, you drive in the right lane. A police car is stopped on the right shoulder with red and blue lights flashing. The lane to your left is full, and you cannot move over safely. What should you do?
Blue car A is in the right freeway lane. Four silver cars fill the lane to its left, and police SUV B is stopped on the right shoulder. The card states that the police lights flash.
Correct answer: Slow down and give the police car as much room as your lane allows
Why
Utah's move-over law applies when you approach a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing red, red and white, or red and blue lights. You must slow down, give it as much space as practical, and move to a lane that is not next to it when you can do so safely. The same duties apply to a stopped tow truck or highway maintenance vehicle with flashing amber lights and to a stopped vehicle with its hazard lights on. A driver who breaks this law must also take a four-hour defensive driving class.
