Passing target: 80% (40/50)
On a two-lane road with one lane in each direction, the car ahead stops at an intersection to wait for a left turn. The paved shoulder on the right is wide enough for your car. What should you do?
Blue A follows silver B on a two-lane road. B is stopped before an intersection for a left turn. A solid white edge separates the travel lane from a wide paved shoulder on their right.
Correct answer: Pass on the right only if it is safe and you stay on the roadway; if not, wait
Why
Utah allows a pass on the right only when the vehicle ahead is turning left or when the road has room for two or more lines of traffic in your direction. Even then, you may pass only when it is safe, and you must stay on the roadway. The roadway does not include the shoulder, even when the shoulder is paved. If there is no room, wait for the car ahead to turn.
