You are behind a school bus on a two-lane road. The bus stops with its red lights flashing. The children get on, and the door closes, but the red lights still flash. What should you do?
Blue car A is behind school bus B on a two-lane road. B’s passenger door is closed. A separate rear-lamp detail shows the outer red warning lamps lit, and the card states that they are still flashing.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the bus turns off its flashing red lights
Why
When a school bus shows flashing red lights, Utah law requires you to stop before you reach the bus and to stay stopped until the red lights stop. On a two-lane road, traffic from both directions must stop. The red lights stay on while children get on or off the bus or cross the road, so the lights, not your view, tell you when to go. Illegal passing of a stopped school bus is a misdemeanor with a minimum fine of $1,000 for a first offense.
