You back out of a parking space and want the rear of your car to swing toward the left. How should you turn the steering wheel?
Blue car A faces into a parking space. The card says A is backing out and the driver wants its rear to move left. A separate detail shows a steering wheel held in its straight position.
Correct answer: Turn the wheel to the left, the same way that you want the rear to move
Why
The same steering rule applies forward and in reverse: turn the wheel in the direction that you want to go, and when you back up, that means the direction in which the rear must move. Steering in reverse is harder, so back slowly and make small corrections. If you turn while you back up, make quick checks to the front and sides, because the front of the car swings out. Keep looking to the rear until the car stops.
