On a rural two-lane highway, you must stop to check your load. A wide gravel pullout is 300 feet ahead, and a hill crest is just beyond it. What should you do?
Blue car A travels on a rural two-lane road and needs to stop to check its load. A separate location panel shows a gravel pullout 300 ft ahead. The card says the pullout is before a hill crest, illustrated in a separate profile.
Correct answer: Drive to the gravel pullout and park fully off the traveled road
Why
Outside a business or residence district, Utah law does not let you stop, park or leave a vehicle on the roadway when you can practically stop off it. If you must stop on the roadway, leave room for other vehicles to pass and make sure that drivers can see your vehicle from 200 feet in each direction. A vehicle stopped in a lane or just past a hill crest can cause a rear-end crash. The rule does not apply when a breakdown makes it impossible to move the vehicle off the road.
