Passing target: 80% (40/50)
You want to pass a bicyclist who rides near the right edge of a two-lane road. Because of oncoming traffic, you can leave only about two feet between your mirror and the rider. What should you do?
Blue A follows bicyclist B near the right edge of a narrow two-lane road. Silver C approaches near the center line in the opposite lane. The card states the available mirror-to-rider clearance is only two feet.
Correct answer: Stay behind the rider until you can pass with at least three feet
Why
Utah law does not let a driver knowingly or recklessly drive a motor vehicle within three feet of a vulnerable road user. That group includes bicyclists, people on foot, horseback riders, motorcyclists and people on scooters or skateboards. A rider can swerve around a pothole or gravel, and the wind from a passing vehicle can push the rider off balance. If oncoming traffic stops you from giving three feet, slow down and wait for a safe gap.
