Your car stalls on a railroad crossing and will not restart. You and your passengers are now out of the car and well away from the tracks. What should you do next?
Correct answer: Call the number on the crossing's emergency sign and give the crossing number posted there.
Why
A car stuck on a crossing is a dangerous condition at that crossing. The Vermont manual tells you to report a crossing hazard with the telephone number on the emergency sign and to give the crossing number that is posted with it. Get everyone out, move well away from the tracks, and never go back into the car to try to move it. A train cannot stop quickly, so an early call to the railroad protects you and the train crew.
