Passing target: 80% (16/20)
You drive through a construction area where the shoulder is several inches lower than the pavement. Your right wheels drift off the edge and drop onto the shoulder. What should you do?
A’s right wheels are off the pavement on a lower shoulder in a construction area. A side-view inset shows the step down at the pavement edge.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas without braking, and steer back onto the pavement gently at a slow speed.
Why
Low shoulders are common in construction zones, where the pavement can be higher than the ground beside it. If the tires hit the raised edge at speed or during a sharp turn, the car can jump back across the road. Hold the wheel steady, let the car slow down, and make a small, controlled steering move back onto the pavement when the way is clear.
