You park facing uphill on a street, next to a curb on your right. How should you set the front wheels?
A is parked facing uphill with a curb on the right. A side-view slope identifies uphill; no wheel-setting detail or correct direction is selected.
Correct answer: Turn them to the left, away from the curb, and set the parking brake.
Why
On a hill, gravity pulls a parked car downhill if the brake or the transmission does not hold. The wheel position lets the curb or the road edge stop the car before it rolls into traffic. Downhill, or uphill with no curb, turn the wheels toward the side of the road. With an automatic transmission, put the shift lever in park; with a manual transmission, use first gear on an upgrade and reverse on a downgrade.
