The turn signals on an old pickup truck ahead of you do not work. The driver puts the left arm out of the window, bent at the elbow, with the hand pointing up. What does this signal mean?
An isolated rear-view detail shows the driver’s left upper arm extended outward and the forearm bent up, hand upright. The card repeats only this physical gesture.
Correct answer: The driver plans to turn right.
Why
Drivers give hand signals from the left side of the vehicle when the signal lamps do not work or other drivers cannot see them. Leave extra space behind a driver who signals by hand, because the driver has only one hand on the wheel. Bicyclists use the same signals, and the handbook shows a second way for a bicyclist to signal a right turn.
