Weather, Visibility & EmergenciesStandalone practice
Your older car does not have an anti-lock braking system (ABS). On an icy road, you must slow down quickly for stopped traffic ahead. How should you brake?
An older-car pedal detail accompanies the given ice and no-ABS facts. Both pedals are unmarked in the question frame.
Correct answer: Pump the brake pedal gently, so that the wheels do not lock and skid.
Why
A car with locked front wheels slides straight ahead and does not answer the steering wheel. Gentle pumping keeps some grip, so you can still steer around a hazard. In a car with ABS, do not pump: press firmly and hold, and let the system pump for you.
