Florida Permit Test: 50 Questions, 80% Pass Mark and Retake Fee
How many questions are on the Florida permit test, and what score do you need?
The Florida permit test, officially the Class E Knowledge Exam, has 50 multiple-choice questions about Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices and identifying traffic controls. You must answer 40 correctly, which is 80 percent, to pass. A re-test after a failed test costs $10. Florida calls the permit a learner's license.
Where these facts come from
As of 2026, the exam facts come from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) page on the Class E Knowledge Exam and its teen licensing pages. The question bank, the re-test fee and the exam topics come from section 322.12 of the Florida Statutes, and the course rules come from sections 322.095 and 322.1615. The study advice comes from the Official Florida Driver License Handbook and the FLHSMV general information page. Confirm the rules with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (flhsmv.gov) before you drive.

What is on the Florida permit test
The questions cover road signs as well as the rules of the road.
Florida law gives more detail. Section 322.12 says the exam tests your ability to read and understand highway signs that regulate, warn and direct traffic, and your knowledge of Florida traffic laws, including the laws on driving under the influence. It also tests what you know about the effects of alcohol and controlled substances and the dangers of driving under their influence.
Bicycle and pedestrian questions
Florida law says that at least 25 questions in the bank of test questions must address bicycle and pedestrian safety. The bank is the full pool of test questions. Know the road-sharing rules, such as at least three feet of clearance when you drive next to or pass a bicyclist. Practice with questions on passing a bicyclist and yielding to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Where can you take the Florida permit test?
If you fail the Florida permit test: the $10 re-test fee
Florida law sets a $10 fee for each knowledge test after a failed first test. In a tax collector office, a $6.25 service fee also applies to driver license transactions.
A pass with a third party administrator has one more rule. FLHSMV can pick you at random, without notice, for a mandatory re-test at no fee. If you fail that re-test, you pay a re-exam fee at your next exam attempt.
How to study for the Florida Class E Knowledge Exam
- Read the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, the guide that FLHSMV names for the exam.
- Work through the handbook's Study Guide for Knowledge Exam section. FLHSMV also publishes a list that shows the handbook page for the answer to each study guide question.
- Take practice tests, such as the FLHSMV Class E Knowledge Practice Test. Our free practice tests are in English only, like the exam.
Driver education course for a Florida learner's license
To get a Florida learner's license, you must pass the Class E Knowledge Exam and complete a driver education course. Florida law requires a department-approved course that meets or exceeds Department of Education course 1900300, and the FLHSMV teen page of October 3, 2026 lists Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course completion. Section 322.095 requires a traffic law and substance abuse education (TLSAE) course for applicants 18 or older, unless they were licensed in another jurisdiction or finished a Department of Education driver education course. Older FLHSMV pages still say TLSAE for every first-time applicant. Ask FLHSMV which course applies to you.

Florida permit test: common questions
How many questions can you miss on the Florida permit test?
You can miss up to 10 of the 50 questions. FLHSMV says that you must answer 40 out of 50 questions correctly, or score 80 percent, to pass. An 11th wrong answer means a failed test, and the next try costs $10.
How old do you have to be to take the Florida permit test?
Florida law lets FLHSMV issue a learner's license to a person who is at least 15 and has passed the written exam. If you are under 18, you also need a signed or notarized Parental Consent Form, and you can take the exam online only while you are under 18.
Do you need to bring your permit test score to the service center?
No. When you pass with a third party administrator or through a DELAP class, the score reaches FLHSMV electronically. Visit a service center with the required documents and fee. If you took the test online, you also need a signed or notarized Parent Proctoring Form.
Is the Florida driver handbook free?
Yes. Driver license handbooks are available at local driver license service centers at no charge, and you may return them for re-use. You can also download a digital copy from the FLHSMV Handbooks and Manuals page.
