Moving to Wyoming: How Long to Get a Wyoming Driver's License
How long do you have to get a Wyoming driver's license after you move?
WYDOT gives you one year from the day you establish residency in Wyoming. If your license is from Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, Tennessee or Wisconsin, or is a commercial license (CDL), apply as soon as you are a resident. You apply in person, surrender your old license and pay $45 for a Class C license.
Where the Wyoming new-resident facts come from
The one-year rule, the steps to apply and the military rules come from the WYDOT driver license page. The test rules come from the WYDOT testing page. The Compact and CDL periods, the one-license rule, the record transfer and the license term come from the Wyoming Statutes, title 31, chapter 7. The fees come from the WYDOT frequently asked questions page, the document rules from the 2025 WYDOT document list for U.S. citizens, the address rules from the WYDOT Add/Change Information page and the under-21 change from the 2025 HB0030 summary. The skills test waiver, the glasses rule and the Compact state list come from the 2021 WYDOT Class C manual. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Wyoming Department of Transportation (dot.state.wy.us) before you drive.
How soon must you get a Wyoming license?
When does the one year start?
The year starts on the day you establish residency in Wyoming. If you are not sure whether you are a resident yet, call WYDOT Driver Services at 307-777-4800, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on holidays.
Wyoming law lets you hold only one valid driver's license at a time. With a valid license from a Compact state, you may drive on it during your one year (30 days with a CDL).
How to get a Wyoming driver's license as a new resident
- 1Check your driving status
Wyoming will not issue a license while your driving privilege is suspended, revoked, canceled or denied in Wyoming or in any other state. Meet all reinstatement requirements first. At a driver exam office, the examiner can check your status in the Problem Driver Pointer System if you show identification.
- 2Gather your documents
Bring proof of legal presence, proof of identity, your Social Security number and two proofs of Wyoming residency. See our list of documents for a Wyoming license.
- 3Go to a driver exam office in person
You can start on oneWYO, but you must appear in person at a driver exam station to apply. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the application.
- 4Surrender your old license
Hand in your out-of-state license when you apply. If you no longer have it, sign a "No License/ID Card in Possession" affidavit. Then you have your photo taken.
- 5Take the vision screening and any other test
Every applicant completes a vision screening. The next two sections explain when you also take the written test or a skills test.
- 6Pay and wait for the card
The fee is $45 for a Class C license. Pay by check, money order or cash. Some exam stations take credit or debit cards for an extra fee. Expect the card 4 to 6 weeks after the date of issuance.
Do you have to take the written test to transfer your license?
You must pass a written test only if you have never been licensed in any state, or if your license has been expired for two years or more. The test is in English only. If you cannot speak English, you may use an interpreter. It covers your license class, seat belt use and other Wyoming driving laws. Study the WYDOT Rules of the Road manual for Class C. You may take the same written test only twice in one day. Try our free question on a license that expired years ago.
Do you need a skills test or a vision check in Wyoming?
The 2021 Class C manual says the skills test may be waived if you show a valid out-of-state license. For a skills test, bring your own vehicle that is licensed, registered, insured and in good working condition, and book it on oneWYO or with your local office. After a failed skills test, the examiner can make you wait before you try again. See our guide to the Wyoming road test.
If you pass the vision screening only with glasses or contact lenses, you must wear them when you drive (try our free question). With a medical or vision problem, WYDOT may ask your doctor to complete an evaluation form first.

What can delay your Wyoming license
- Old proof of residency. Each of your two proofs of residency must be no more than 45 days old.
- Two proofs from one source. The two proofs of residency must come from different sources.
- A PO Box or mail drop as your address. Proof of residency must show your physical home address.
- A license from another country. The one-year period is for a license from a Compact state, so call Driver Services at 307-777-4800 before you go.
- A license that Wyoming treats as invalid. A license that another jurisdiction issued to a person who is not lawfully in the U.S. is not valid in Wyoming.

Moving to Wyoming: common questions
Does my driving record follow me to Wyoming?
Yes. When you apply after you held a license in another state, Wyoming law tells the division to ask that state for a copy of your driving record. When the record arrives, it becomes part of your Wyoming driving record. Wyoming also tells your old state that you now hold a Wyoming license.
Can I apply for a Wyoming license online?
Not fully. You can start the process on oneWYO, but you must appear in person at a driver exam station to apply for a first-time Wyoming license. At the station you surrender your old license, show your documents, have your photo taken and complete a vision screening.
What if I lost my old license before I moved?
You can still get a Wyoming license. Wyoming law asks you to surrender each valid license that you have. If you were licensed in another state but no longer have the card, you complete a "No License/ID Card in Possession" affidavit before you get the Wyoming license. Wyoming then sends a copy of the affidavit to your old state.
What if I move again before my Wyoming license arrives?
If the card must go to an address other than the one on your application, complete a WYDOT Forwarding Request form. After you have the license, tell WYDOT Driver Services about any new address within 10 days. You can do this on oneWYO. To show the new address on the card, you follow the renewal steps and pay the renewal fee.
