What to Bring to the Wyoming Driver License Office: Documents List

informational·how to guide·

Where the Wyoming document rules come from

The document lists in this guide come from the WYDOT list for U.S. citizens, the WYDOT list for non-U.S. citizens and the WYDOT driver license page. The law behind them is Wyoming Statute (W.S.) 31-7-111, with W.S. 31-7-112 (applicants under 18), 31-7-115 and 31-7-137. The permit, renewal, name change and payment details come from the WYDOT learner's permit, lost and renewal, add or change information and frequently asked questions pages. WYDOT says the requirements can change at any time. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Wyoming Department of Transportation (dot.state.wy.us) before you drive.

What counts as proof of Wyoming residency?

  • Bring two documents. Each one shows your name and your current physical home address, not a P.O. box or a mail drop.
  • Each document can be no more than 45 days old, and the two documents cannot come from the same source.
  • Accepted documents include a lease contract, homeowner or renter insurance, a utility bill, a bank or credit card statement and a paycheck or pay stub.
  • Students can use a report card or a school transcript. For a minor child, a parent or guardian may provide the proof of residence.
  • Your Wyoming driver license and delivered packages do not count as proof of residency.

Extra documents for non-citizens, people born abroad and veterans

You are not a U.S. citizen
Bring one proof of identity, such as an unexpired foreign passport, and all the documents that prove your legal presence, such as a valid U.S. visa. You show your immigration documents at every WYDOT service, not only the first one. By law, the license of a lawful non-citizen says "Not U.S. citizen."
You were born outside the United States
Bring all of the required documents when you apply for a Wyoming license. For a U.S. citizen born abroad, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad is one accepted proof of legal presence.
You are an honorably discharged veteran
Bring your long form DD-214 or other papers that show your honorable discharge. WYDOT then adds the Veteran designation to your credential when it issues it.

Documents for a learner's permit and for drivers under 18

By law, every application, for a learner's permit (the law says instruction permit) or a license, comes with the fee, proof of residence and proof of identity. A parent or guardian who has custody signs the application of anyone under 18. If there is no parent or guardian, the circuit court judge of the applicant's county may sign after a petition to the court. For the intermediate permit, bring the documents on the WYDOT list and proof of 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, and give up your current permit. The guide to Wyoming learner's permit rules covers the permit steps.

How to prepare for your WYDOT visit

  1. 1
    Choose your proofs

Pick one proof of legal presence, one proof of identity and two proofs of residency from the WYDOT list for your situation.

  2. 2
    Check dates and names

Make sure each residency document shows your name and physical address and is no more than 45 days old when you go. If your name changed, add the legal document that links your names.

  3. 3
    Know your Social Security number

The application asks for the number, so have it ready.

  4. 4
    Bring a way to pay

WYDOT accepts check, money order or cash.

  5. 5
    Go in person

Go to your local driver exam office. You get your photo taken and a vision screening. If you have a medical or vision problem, you may need your doctor to complete a Medical or Vision Evaluation form.

Documents for new Wyoming residents and expired licenses

A new resident applies in person, gives up the out-of-state license and shows all the required documents. The guide to moving to Wyoming explains how long you can drive on your old license. You also go in person to renew a Wyoming license that has expired. You can test yourself on this case with a free practice question about a license that expired three years ago.

Keep your license record up to date

After you get your license, tell the division in writing within 10 days if your address or name changes. You can also test yourself on which documents to carry while you drive with a free practice question. Our practice tests and question pages are free and in English only.

Key takeaways

  • If you have not shown your documents before, bring one proof of legal presence, one proof of identity, two proofs of Wyoming residency and your Social Security number.
  • Proof of legal presence is a certified original or a copy certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies, notarized documents and online printouts do not count.
  • Each residency document shows your name and physical address, is no more than 45 days old and comes from a different source.
  • Under 18, a parent or guardian with custody signs the application. Non-U.S. citizens show immigration documents at every service.

Wyoming driver license documents: common questions

Can I use a copy of my birth certificate?

Only a certified copy. Wyoming law accepts a certified copy of your birth certificate, and WYDOT accepts true copies certified by the issuing agency. A photocopy, a notarized copy or an online printout is not accepted. If you have only a photocopy, get a certified copy from the office that issued the certificate before your visit.

Can I use two bank statements as my two proofs of residency?

Not from the same bank. The two residency documents cannot come from the same source. Pair one bank or credit card statement with a different document, such as a lease contract, a utility bill or homeowner or renter insurance. Both documents must show your name and physical address and be no more than 45 days old.

Do I need my Social Security card?

No. The card is not required, but you must write your Social Security number on the application. Proof of the number is recommended. WYDOT accepts a Social Security card, a W-2 form or another official or government document that shows your name and full Social Security number.

Can I change my name on my Wyoming license with a marriage certificate?

Yes, but only your last name. Any other name change needs a legal name change through the court. For a new name change, change your name with the Social Security Administration first. Then bring the legal document that shows the change to the driver exam office. A divorce decree or a court order also counts as proof.

What if I am not sure my documents are accepted?

Call Driver Services at 307-777-4800, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed holidays). The WYDOT lists are not all inclusive, and Driver Services can ask for more information or documents. A call before you go can save you a second trip to the driver exam office.
