Nebraska Permit Test: What to Expect on the DMV Written Test

informational·how to guide·

Where these Nebraska written test facts come from

The test rules and study tips come from the Nebraska Driver's Manual (January 2025) and the Nebraska DMV pages for the practice exam, the learner's permits, the School Permit, the Provisional Operator's Permit, the Class O license, new residents and drive test retakes. The remote test and the new-resident waiver come from Nebraska Revised Statute 60-4,114, section 60-4,122 and Legislative Bill 972 of 2026. The ASL test comes from a 2021 Nebraska DMV news release. The rules are as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Nebraska DMV (dmv.nebraska.gov) before you drive.

Who takes the Nebraska written test?

The Nebraska DMV may require the written (knowledge) test if you apply for your first Nebraska license, if you cannot present a valid out-of-state license, or if your Nebraska license expired more than one year ago. Teens take it to get a learner's permit: the School Learner's Permit (LPE) and the Learner's Permit (LPD) both need a vision test and a written test. To learn what each permit lets you do, see the Nebraska learner's permit rules.

What is on the Nebraska DMV written test?

The written test checks what you know about Nebraska motor vehicle laws. The Nebraska Driver's Manual, January 2025 edition, has the information to pass the LPE, LPD, SCP, POP and Class O tests. There is a separate written test for each license class, so make sure that you study for the permit or license that you apply for.

How to study for the Nebraska written test

  1. 1
    Read the manual

Read the Nebraska Driver's Manual before you try practice questions. It is free on the DMV website in English and Spanish, and there is an audio version.

  2. 2
Take the DMV online practice test

Each question has one correct answer. The number at the end of each question gives the manual page with the answer, so when you miss one, read that whole section.

  3. 3
    Use the sample tests

The manual has a sample test in the back. The DMV also offers an AAA sample test as a study guide for the written test.

  4. 4
    Add extra practice

Our Nebraska practice tests and question pages are free and in English only. They help you review the manual topics. They are not the official test.

Are the DMV practice questions on the real Nebraska test?

No. The DMV online practice test is designed to show you the format of the written test. The manual says that the questions in its practice exam are different from the questions on the actual test. So do not memorize answers. Learn the rule behind each answer, and use the practice test together with the manual, not instead of it.

Can you take the Nebraska permit test online or in ASL?

Only with an approved proctor. Since July 18, 2026, state law lets the knowledge test be given remotely if an agent approved by the DMV director proctors it. The law came from Legislative Bill 972, which the Governor approved on April 14, 2026. Before you plan to test from home, ask the Nebraska DMV if a remote test is offered yet.
The American Sign Language (ASL) version of the car knowledge test runs on the DMV's automated testing tablets. It shows videos of an interpreter who signs each question, and it is available at all DMV locations that give tests.

Do you take the written test if you move to Nebraska?

You are 18 or older and surrender a valid license from another state
You take a vision test, and driver licensing staff decide if you take a drive test (DMV). A 2026 change to state law also lets the DMV choose not to require the knowledge test for a valid physical or mobile license from your home state.
You cannot surrender your out-of-state license, or it expired more than a year ago
You take the written test and the drive test (DMV).
Your out-of-state license expired less than a year ago
Expect the written test. The DMV says that the drive test may be waived. Confirm with the DMV before you go.
You are under 18
You must meet all Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) requirements and get a POP (DMV).

What happens if you fail the Nebraska written test?

A failed test may not be retaken the same day. Our free question on the earliest day to retake the written test lets you practice that rule. If you are denied the permit or license that you applied for, the DMV gives you a Return for Services form that explains the reason. Bring it with you when you return to the driver licensing office. Before your next try, reread the manual sections that gave you trouble.

Do you also take a drive test in Nebraska?

For a School Permit or POP with a 50-hour certification, and for a first Class O license at 18 or older without a POP, the DMV also gives a vision test and a drive test. After three failed Class O drive tests in a row, you cannot reapply until you complete a DMV-approved driver training course with at least six hours of classroom and six hours of behind-the-wheel training, or until you have held an LPD for at least 90 days. Try our free question on three failed drive tests, and read the Nebraska drive test guide.

Key takeaways

  • The written test covers the Nebraska Driver's Manual (January 2025), and each license class has its own test.
  • Study the manual first. The DMV practice test shows the format. The manual says that the questions in its practice exam are different from the real test.
  • A failed test may not be retaken the same day. Bring the Return for Services form when you come back.
  • A DMV-approved driver safety course waives the written and drive tests for a School Permit or POP. An LPE, SCP or LPD that is valid or expired no more than one year waives the LPD written test.
  • Next step: practice on the free Nebraska Class O learner's license practice test.

Nebraska permit test: common questions

Is the Nebraska permit test hard?

Many people do not pass on the first try: over 32% of first-time applicants fail the written test. The questions test what is in the Nebraska Driver's Manual, so read all of it, not only sample questions. Then check yourself with the DMV online practice test and the sample test at the back of the manual, and reread each section where you miss a question.

Do I need an appointment for the Nebraska permit test?

In Bellevue, Lincoln and Omaha, drive testing is by appointment only, and the DMV highly recommends an appointment for other services because walk-in help is limited. An online appointment in those cities completes your data form for you. If you do not book online, complete the data form from the DMV website before you go. The ASL written test needs no appointment at any DMV location that gives tests.

Do I take a vision test with the Nebraska permit test?

Yes. The DMV gives a vision test to all non-commercial permit and license applicants, and the LPE and LPD each need a vision test and a written test. The vision test measures visual acuity (how clearly you see) and peripheral vision (how well you see to the side). If you do not meet the standards, an ophthalmologist or optometrist must check the findings.

Do I take the written test again if my Nebraska permit expired?

Not if it expired one year ago or less. For a Learner's Permit (LPD), the DMV waives the written test if you were issued an LPE, SCP or LPD that is valid or expired for no more than one year. For a first Class O license at 18 or older, an LPD with the same one-year limit waives it. After more than one year, these waivers do not apply.
