Nebraska Driving Test: Car Rules, What Is Tested and Retakes

informational·how to guide·

Where the Nebraska drive test facts come from

The rules come from the Nebraska Driver's Manual (January 2025), the Nebraska DMV pages on drive test retakes and the Class O license, other Nebraska DMV pages (driving test vehicle, new residents, driver safety schools), DMV service center news releases of 2025 and 2026, and Nebraska Revised Statute 60-4,114. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Nebraska DMV (dmv.nebraska.gov) before you drive.

Who takes the Nebraska drive test?

You are 18 or older and never held a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP)
You take the vision, written and drive tests for your Class O license. The written test is waived if your Learner's Permit (LPD) is valid, or expired for no more than one year.
You apply for a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) with a 50-hour certification
You take the vision test and the drive test at the DMV. The written test is waived with a Learner's Permit (LPD) that is valid or expired for no more than one year. See how the 50-hour certification and the driver safety course compare.
You have a POP and apply for a Class O license
Under 18, the written and drive tests are waived if you held the POP for at least 12 months and got fewer than three points in the last 12 months. If you held a POP and apply between 18 and 21, the written and drive tests are waived.
You are a new Nebraska resident
At 18 or older, if you surrender a valid out-of-state license, you take a vision test, and driver licensing staff decide on the drive test. If you cannot surrender it, you take the written and drive tests. If your license is expired, confirm your tests with the Nebraska DMV. Under 18, you must meet the POP rules.
Any other license applicant
Driver licensing staff may still give you a drive test at their discretion.

What the car must have for the Nebraska drive test

  • You bring the car, and it must match the type of license you apply for.
  • It must be in good mechanical condition, with working brake lights.
  • A car of model year 1964 or later needs a clean, working passenger seat belt for the examiner. A car of model year 1973 or later needs clean, working seat belts for the passenger and the driver.
  • The speedometer must work properly.
  • The inside of the car must be clean.
  • You cannot use an autocycle: the DMV gives no drive test in an autocycle for a permit or a Class O license.

What the examiner tests on the Nebraska drive test

  • Starting and stopping
  • Right and left turns
  • Lane usage and position
  • Stop signs and traffic signals
  • Speed control
  • Use of right of way
  • Parking and backing: review our free question on how close to the curb you must park
  • Other maneuvers, because the list in the manual is not complete

How a Nebraska DMV drive test visit goes

  1. 1
Book an appointment if you use an office in Bellevue, Lincoln or Omaha

Offices in these three cities give drive tests by appointment only. If you book online, your data form is completed electronically.

  2. 2
Fill in the data form and pack your documents

If you did not book online, complete the data form before you go. Bring proof of citizenship or lawful status, identification, and two documents with your Nebraska principal address from two different sources. A P.O. Box does not count.

  3. 3
    Take the vision test

All permit and Class O applicants take it. It checks how sharp your sight is (visual acuity) and how well you see to the side (peripheral vision).

  4. 4
    Take the drive test

Drive the car that you brought. Driver licensing staff test you on the maneuvers above.

What happens if you fail the Nebraska drive test?

You cannot retake a failed test the same day. If the DMV denies the document that you applied for, you get a Return for Services form that explains the reason. Bring it back when you return to the driver licensing office.
After three failed drive tests in a row, a Class O applicant cannot reapply until he or she completes a DMV-approved driver training course or has held an LPD for at least 90 days. The DMV says the course has at least six hours in a classroom and six hours behind the wheel. Try our free question on three failed drive tests.

What happens after you pass the Nebraska drive test?

At a DMV service center, you finish in one transaction with the examiner and do not pay county treasurer staff. Service centers are in the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas, Grand Island and Norfolk. At other offices, you get an issuance certificate. Within 90 days, take it to a county treasurer outside Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy Counties, or to a state driver licensing office in those counties, and pay the license fee. Some offices do not take checks, so have cash if in doubt.
You get a 30-day receipt. The TSA does not accept it as ID to board a plane. Your card comes by U.S. Mail in about 20 days and is not forwarded, so give the DMV your current address.

Key takeaways

  • You bring the car. It needs good mechanical condition, working brake lights, a working speedometer, a clean interior and seat belts by model year.
  • The test covers starting and stopping, turns, lane position, signs and signals, speed control, right of way, parking and backing.
  • Bellevue, Lincoln and Omaha give drive tests by appointment only.
  • A failed test cannot be retaken the same day. After three fails in a row, you need an approved driver training course or an LPD held for 90 days.
  • Next step: practice the road rules on the free Nebraska Class O learner's license practice test before your test day.

Nebraska drive test: common questions

Can a driver safety school give my Nebraska drive test?

Driver safety schools teach and test students for the School Permit and the POP, and they typically teach ages 14 to 16. Their instructors are authorized to give the DMV drive test. The DMV may waive its own drive test when it receives your passed results from the school.

Can I get a disability accommodation for the Nebraska drive test?

Yes. The Nebraska DMV makes accommodations for applicants with a disability. Contact your local driver licensing office or the state DMV office before your test day and tell staff what you need. Ask early, because drive tests in Bellevue, Lincoln and Omaha are by appointment only.

Do I wear glasses on the Nebraska drive test?

Yes, if you need glasses or contacts to meet the vision standard. You must wear them at all times while you drive, and your license shows the restriction. If you cannot meet the standard, an ophthalmologist or optometrist must check the findings. Applicants who still cannot meet it are denied a license.

Can I appeal if the Nebraska DMV denies my license?

Yes. Nebraska law gives an applicant who is denied or refused a license the right to an immediate appeal to the DMV director. The director must review the appeal and issue a final order not later than 10 days after receiving it. Your Return for Services form explains the reason for the denial.
