Oklahoma Point System: 10 Points, Suspensions and Teen Ticket Rules
How does the Oklahoma point system work for new drivers?
Oklahoma adds points to your driving record after a court conviction, not when you get the ticket. Each pointable violation adds 1 to 4 points, and 10 or more points within 5 years means a suspension of 1 to 12 months. For a teen, a conviction also restarts the clock: 180 days on a learner permit before the drive test, or the intermediate time before the unrestricted license.
Where the Oklahoma point rules come from
The point values, the point reductions and the course credit come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. The 10-point limit, the suspension lengths, the reinstatement steps and the Modified Driver License come from the Service Oklahoma violations, suspensions and reinstatements page. The rules for teens come from Oklahoma law, Title 47, section 6-105. Other rules come from Title 47, sections 6-107, 6-205, 6-206, 11-705, 11-810, 11-901d and 11-901e, the Service Oklahoma unrestricted license page and a Service Oklahoma help article about permit tickets (April 9, 2024). This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.
When do points go on your Oklahoma driving record?
Points go on your record when a court convicts you of a pointable violation. Service Oklahoma tracks them with the Oklahoma Mandatory Point System. A conviction in any court, anywhere, that has authority over the violation counts.
When your total reaches 10 or more points within 5 years, Service Oklahoma suspends your license. For example, five 2-point convictions, such as speeding or failure to yield, within 5 years make 10 points.
How many points does each Oklahoma violation give?
| Violation | Points |
|---|---|
| Speeding | 2 |
| Speeding more than 25 mph over the limit | 3 |
| Failing to stop for a school bus that loads or unloads | 4 |
| Reckless driving | 4 |
| Failing to obey a stop sign or traffic light | 2 |
| Failing to yield the right of way | 2 |
| Violating a license restriction | 2 |
| Careless driving | 2 |
| Following too close or improperly | 2 |
| Driving left of center, or the wrong way on a one-way street | 2 |
| Operating a defective vehicle | 1 |
| All other pointable violations | 1 |
Does every speeding ticket add points in Oklahoma?
No. Oklahoma law adds no points for speeding 1 to 10 mph over the limit, unless you hold a commercial driver license or drive a commercial vehicle. Other speeding convictions are 2 points, and speeding more than 25 mph over the posted limit is 3 points.
What happens after an Oklahoma school bus ticket?
Failing to stop, or to stay stopped, for a school bus that loads or unloads is 4 points. The fine is at least $100, plus a $100 special assessment. When the conviction is final, Service Oklahoma revokes the license. The first revocation is 1 year, and the law says that period may be modified. How long is an Oklahoma point suspension?
| Point suspension | Length |
|---|---|
| First | 1 month |
| Second | 3 months |
| Third | 6 months |
| Fourth or later | 12 months |
How do you get your license back after a point suspension?
Serve the full suspension period and pay the statutory reinstatement fee. In some cases, you must also meet with a Driver Compliance Hearing Officer to apply for reinstatement. For a point suspension that comes from too many traffic violations, a Modified Driver License may be possible. It is not available for DUI-related offenses.
What does a ticket do to a learner permit or intermediate license?
Can a teen lose a permit or license for one ticket?
Yes. Service Oklahoma may suspend or cancel a learner permit or an intermediate license for a violation of its restrictions, for a traffic law violation, or for hand-held device use while driving when there is no life-threatening emergency. It may also cancel or suspend the license of any driver under 18 for an unlawful act, negligence or misconduct while driving. A texting ticket, or a ticket for a hand-held phone in a school zone or construction zone, adds no points, but it can still cost a teen the permit or license. How can you remove points in Oklahoma?
- Go 12 months in a row with no pointable conviction. Two points then come off for each 12-month period.
- Go 3 years in a row with no traffic violation conviction. Your points then go to zero.
- Finish an approved driver improvement or defensive driving course. Two points come off once every 24 months, and the total cannot go below zero. The school sends Service Oklahoma the list of people who finish.
- An employer accident prevention course does not reduce points.

Oklahoma driving points: common questions
Does paying a ticket count as a conviction in Oklahoma?
Yes, when the court reports it. If you pay a ticket and the court reports it to Service Oklahoma, a permit holder must wait 180 days from the conviction date before the drive test. To find that date for a Highway Patrol or county ticket, search the Oklahoma State Courts Network. For a city ticket, check the city website or call the court clerk.
Do out-of-state tickets add points to my Oklahoma license?
They can. Oklahoma assesses points for a conviction in any court, anywhere, that has authority over the violation. Service Oklahoma may also suspend your driving privilege when it gets a report of a conviction in another state. Confirm your case with Service Oklahoma before you rely on a point total.
How do I check how many points I have in Oklahoma?
Request your driving record from Service Oklahoma. The prior-three-year record costs $25 and shows up to three years of driving history. The suspension limit counts points over 5 years, and points also come off with time, so ask Service Oklahoma for your current total if you are near 10 points.
How many points is a careless driving ticket in Oklahoma?
Careless driving is 2 points. Following too close is also 2 points, and reckless driving is 4 points. On a learner permit or an intermediate license, a conviction for any of these also restarts the time before you can move to the next license stage.
