Oklahoma Intermediate License Rules: Curfew, Passengers, Unrestricted
What are the rules for an Oklahoma Intermediate License?
An Oklahoma Intermediate License lets you drive alone from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., with one passenger unless all passengers live in your household. You may drive later to and from work, school, school activities and church activities. A licensed driver 21 or older beside you lifts both limits. You can get the Unrestricted License after 1 year, or after 180 days with driver education and parent-certified training.
Where the Oklahoma Intermediate License facts come from
The hours, passenger limits, training hours, waiting times and penalties come from the Oklahoma law on teen licenses, Title 47, Section 6-105. The eligibility rules, fees and retest rules come from the Service Oklahoma Intermediate License page. The minimum ages for the last step come from the Service Oklahoma Unrestricted License page. The course time, the online upgrade and the ticket rule come from Service Oklahoma press releases (2023 and 2025) and a Service Oklahoma help article (April 2024). This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

What the Oklahoma Intermediate License lets you do
Oklahoma uses a Graduated Driver License (GDL) program. The Intermediate License comes after the Learner Permit and the drive test, and the Unrestricted License is the final stage. You may drive alone, but the law limits your hours and your passengers until you upgrade. Test your reading of these limits with our free questions on driving home from a job at night and which passengers a 16-year-old may carry.
What do you need to get an Oklahoma Intermediate License?
- Hold a Learner Permit for at least 180 days. The permit starts at 15 with driver education, and at 16 without it. Our guide to the Oklahoma Learner Permit covers that first step.
- Be at least 16 with driver education. Without driver education, Service Oklahoma sets the age at 16 1/2.
- Get 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, with 10 hours at night, from a licensed driver 21 or older who has held a Class D license for at least 2 years. Your parent or guardian certifies the hours on the Affidavit of Driver Training.
- If you are under 18, finish the free online Oklahoma Work Zone Safe Course (about 45 minutes) and bring the certificate to your drive test.
- Have no traffic convictions on your driving record for the 180 days before the drive test.
- Pass the drive test at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office or with an eligible designated examiner.
Does a traffic ticket delay your Oklahoma license?
Yes. Under Oklahoma law, a traffic conviction on your driving record restarts the 180-day permit period from the date of the conviction. With more than one conviction, the count starts from the most recent one. Count from the date of the court conviction for your last ticket. The same restart applies after you get the Intermediate License: the wait for the Unrestricted License starts again from the conviction date.
How much does the Oklahoma Intermediate License cost?
Service Oklahoma charges $25 to print and issue the Intermediate License. For each failed drive test attempt, it adds $4 to that fee. You may take the drive test up to three times, each at least one day apart or as the examiner says. After a third fail, you must wait 30 days before a fourth try.

When do you get the Oklahoma Unrestricted License?
Can you lose an Oklahoma Intermediate License?
Yes. Service Oklahoma may suspend or cancel an Intermediate License at its discretion. The law lists these reasons: a broken license restriction, such as the hours or the passenger limit; false or missing information on the application; a broken Oklahoma traffic law about driving; and use of a hand-held electronic device while you drive, unless it is for a life-threatening emergency.
Key takeaways
- Drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., except to and from work, school, school activities and church activities.
- Carry one passenger at most, unless all live in your household. A licensed driver 21 or older beside you lifts both limits.
- To apply, hold the permit for 180 days, get 50 training hours (10 at night), finish the Work Zone Safe Course and pass the drive test.
- A traffic conviction restarts the wait. The Unrestricted License comes after 1 year, or after 180 days with driver education and the parent-certified hours.
- Next step: practice on the free Oklahoma Class D practice test.
Oklahoma Intermediate License: common questions
Can I drive home from a school game after 10 p.m. in Oklahoma?
Yes. Oklahoma law lets an Intermediate License holder drive outside the 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. hours to and from school activities, such as a game. The same exception covers work, school and church activities. The passenger limit still applies on that trip: one passenger, unless all your passengers live in your household.
Do I need driver education to get an Oklahoma Intermediate License?
No, but it changes your ages and your wait. With driver education, you can get the Learner Permit at 15 and the Intermediate License at 16. Without it, the permit starts at 16, and Service Oklahoma sets the Intermediate License age at 16 1/2. Driver education plus the parent-certified hours also opens the 180-day route to the Unrestricted License.
Can my parent sit in the back seat so I can carry more friends?
No. The passenger limit ends only when a licensed driver 21 or older actually sits in the seat beside you, which Service Oklahoma calls the front seat. A parent in the back seat does not lift the limit, so two friends from other homes may not ride with you on that trip.
Is an Oklahoma Intermediate License a REAL ID?
Not on its own. Service Oklahoma says an Intermediate License is not a REAL ID, but a REAL ID indicator can be added when the license is issued. To add it, bring the REAL ID documents to your appointment. If you also change your address, bring two proofs of address instead of one. Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID or another federal ID, such as a U.S. passport, to fly within the U.S.
Do I need another test to get the Unrestricted License?
No. Service Oklahoma says there are no tests or other steps before you schedule the upgrade. When you have held the Intermediate License for the required time, you can apply online in 10 minutes or less, if you meet the age rule and have no traffic convictions in the required time. The Unrestricted License has no limits on hours or passengers.
