Passing a School Bus in Oklahoma: When to Stop, Fine and Points

informational·how to guide·

Where the Oklahoma school bus law facts come from

The stop rule, the exceptions, the fine and the camera rules come from Oklahoma law, 47 O.S. 11-705. The church bus rule comes from 47 O.S. 11-705.1. The revocation rules come from 47 O.S. 6-205. The point value, the 10-point suspension rule and the driving tips come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual of Service Oklahoma. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

Do you have to stop? Four school bus situations

The bus is stopped to take on or discharge school children, its red loading signals are on, and you come up behind it or toward it
Stop before you reach the bus. The law covers drivers who overtake the bus and drivers who meet it.
You are on a highway with separate roadways, and the bus is on a different roadway
You do not have to stop. The Driver Manual gives a divided highway as the example. Try our free question on a school bus across a grass median.
You are on a controlled-access highway, and the bus is stopped in a loading zone that is part of or next to the highway, where pedestrians may not cross the roadway
You do not have to stop.
You are on a two-lane road with no median, and a bus comes toward you with red lights flashing
Stop. The road has no separate roadways, so drivers in both directions must stop.

When can you drive past the school bus again?

  • Stay stopped until the loading signals are deactivated. Our free question on red school bus signals tests this rule.
  • Then pass only at a reasonable speed and with due caution for the safety of the children and other occupants of the bus.
  • Watch for children near the bus, and be ready to slow down and stop. If a child who got off the bus is still in the road, stay stopped. See our free question on children around a stopped bus.

Does the Oklahoma law also apply to church buses?

Yes. Oklahoma law gives the same rule for a church bus that is stopped to take on or discharge passengers with its red loading signals on. You must stop before you reach it and wait until the signals are off. The two exceptions also apply: a bus on a different roadway of a highway with separate roadways, and a bus in a loading zone on a controlled-access highway where pedestrians may not cross. The license revocation law names the church bus section too.

What do red lights on an Oklahoma school bus mean?

The law lets a bus driver turn on the red signals only when the bus is stopped on the highway to receive or discharge school children. So when a school bus shows flashing red lights or a red STOP sign, children are getting on or off, and you must stop.

Penalties for passing a stopped school bus in Oklahoma

Penalties for passing a stopped school bus in Oklahoma
PenaltyAmount or rule
FineAt least $100
Special assessment$100, added to the fine

LicenseMandatory revocation after a final conviction; the first revocation is one year, which may be modified

Can you lose your license for passing a school bus?

Yes. Failure to stop or to remain stopped for a school bus that loads or unloads children is on the list of offenses for mandatory revocation in Oklahoma law. When the conviction becomes final, Service Oklahoma revokes the driving privilege of the driver, adult or juvenile. The first revocation for this offense is one year, and the law says that the period may be modified.

How many points is passing a school bus in Oklahoma?

The Oklahoma Driver Manual lists failure to stop or remain stopped for a school bus that is loading or unloading as a 4-point offense under the Oklahoma Mandatory Point System. If you gather 10 or more points within 5 years, your license is suspended. So 4 points from one school bus ticket is a large part of that limit. For more on points, see our guide to Oklahoma driving points for new drivers.

How bus drivers and cameras report a driver who passes a school bus

  • Bus driver report. The bus driver must report the violation, the vehicle color, the license tag number, and the time and place to the police of the city or town by the end of the next business day.
  • Warning letter. That police authority then sends a letter of warning to the person in whose name the vehicle is registered.
  • Bus cameras. A school district may put a video-monitoring system on its buses or bus stop-arms, or have a private vendor do it, to record violations. The district sends the recorded data to the local police for review.

Key takeaways

  • Stop before you reach a school bus that is stopped with its red loading signals on, and stay stopped until the signals are off.
  • You do not have to stop when the bus is on a different roadway of a highway with separate roadways, or in a controlled-access loading zone where pedestrians may not cross.
  • The same stop rule covers church buses.
  • The penalty is a fine of at least $100 plus a $100 special assessment, 4 points and a one-year license revocation that may be modified.

Oklahoma school bus law: common questions

Can I drive on when the school bus driver waves me on?

The law says to stay stopped until the red loading signals are off. The Oklahoma Driver Manual also lists two other signs that you may go: the bus starts to move, or the bus driver motions you to proceed. If the red lights are still on, wait until they go off. That meets both the law and the manual.

How much does a school bus ticket cost in Oklahoma?

The law sets a fine of at least $100 and adds a $100 special assessment, so the amounts in the law start at $200. Of the assessment, 75 percent goes to the Cameras for School Bus Stops Revolving Fund and 25 percent goes to the law enforcement agency that reviews the camera evidence.

Can a school bus camera be used against me?

Yes. The camera system must record at least your license plate, an identifiable picture of your face, the status of a warning device on the bus, and the time, date and location. If the police find enough evidence to identify the vehicle and the driver, the evidence goes to the district attorney's office for prosecution.

Can a school bus license revocation be shortened?

The law says the one-year revocation may be modified, and a modification applies to Class D motor vehicles only. An appeal of the revocation follows Section 6-211 of Title 47. Confirm the steps for your case with Service Oklahoma.

Does a school bus warning letter go on my driving record?

No. The law says a warning letter that follows a bus driver's report is not recorded on your driving record. But the letter does not stop other penalties that the law allows, such as the fine and the license revocation.
