Oklahoma Drive Test: What to Bring, What's on It and Retest Rules

informational·how to guide·

Where the Oklahoma drive test facts come from

The route, car checklist, documents, eligibility and retest rules come from the Service Oklahoma Drive Test Center page. Teen rules, designated examiners and the temporary license come from the Service Oklahoma Intermediate License page. Reasons for failing and the free Service Oklahoma test come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. Other facts come from the Service Oklahoma Vehicle Inspection Checklist, written test page and Sweet Sixteen Guarantee news release (2024), and from Oklahoma law (Title 47, sections 6-101, 6-105 and 6-110). This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

What to bring to the Oklahoma drive test

Who can take the Oklahoma drive test?

You are under 18 and you finished driver education
You must be at least 16 and have held a valid Learner Permit for at least 180 days, with no traffic conviction in the 180 days before the test. A parent or guardian must certify 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, with at least 10 at night, with a licensed driver who is 21 or older and has held a license for at least 2 years.
You are under 18 and you did not finish driver education
You must be at least 16 1/2. The other rules are the same: a Learner Permit for at least 180 days with no conviction, and the same 50 certified hours of practice.
You are 18 or older
You do not need a Learner Permit. At a Drive Test Center, you must have passed the Oklahoma Written Test in the last 12 months, or you must have finished driver education and held a Learner Permit for 30 days.
You have an active suspension or revocation in Oklahoma or another state
You cannot take the drive test until it ends.

Where can you take the Oklahoma drive test?

Service Oklahoma has two Drive Test Centers, in Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow, and teens can also test at a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office. A drive test with Service Oklahoma is free.
A permit holder can also test with a designated examiner, who may charge a fee. This examiner is a certified driver education instructor who gives the skills part of the test. After a pass with a designated examiner, go to a Licensing Office or a Licensed Operator to get your Intermediate License.
Adults 18 or older can test at Service Oklahoma, at a Licensed Operator or at a third-party driving school that offers drive tests.

What is the Sweet Sixteen Guarantee?

The Sweet Sixteen Guarantee gives a teen a drive test on the 16th birthday, or on the first day the teen is eligible. These tests are at the Oklahoma City and Broken Arrow Drive Test Centers. The teen must have held the Learner Permit for at least 180 days, finished 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice and finished the free online Work Zone Safe Course. Teens can apply online as soon as they get the permit. For the rules after you pass, see our guide to the Oklahoma Intermediate License.

What the examiner checks on the Oklahoma drive test

  • Parking and hills: parallel parking, hill parking and starting on a hill.
  • Intersections and turns: how you move through intersections, and left and right turns.
  • Lanes: how you look around and change lanes.
  • Right-of-way: for pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Car control: use of the brake and accelerator, and use of the automatic transmission or the clutch.
  • Traffic lights and signals: that you obey them.
  • Overall control: that you control the car in an ordinary and reasonable way for the whole route.

Why do people fail the Oklahoma drive test?

You can fail the drive test for too many errors, dangerous driving, a law violation, a traffic collision or a refusal to do a maneuver. After the test, the examiner explains the driving errors that you made. Practice the parking and hill maneuvers before test day. What to do if you fail the Oklahoma drive test

  1. 1
Ask the examiner when you can retest

The examiner tells you when you can take the test again. You can take the test up to 3 times, each attempt at least 1 day apart or as the examiner tells you.

  2. 2
Bring your form if you tested with a designated examiner

If you fail with a designated examiner, you get a DL18DE form. Bring it to your retest appointment.

  3. 3
After the third fail, wait 30 days

If you have a permit and fail the third test, you must wait 30 days before the fourth test. After that, you can test no more than one time every 30 days.

  4. 4
    No permit? Get one first

If you are 18 or older, have no permit and fail the third test, you must get a Learner Permit and hold it for 30 days before you test again.

  5. 5
    Plan for the fail fee

Each failed attempt adds $4 to the fee that you pay when your license is issued. See all fees in our guide to Oklahoma license costs.

Key takeaways

  • At a Drive Test Center, the drive test is a 5-mile route of about 20 minutes, with maneuvers such as parallel parking, hill parking and starting on a hill.
  • Bring the insurance verification form. Permit holders also bring the permit and an Affidavit of Driver Training or a parent or guardian; under 18, also bring the Work Zone Safe Course certificate.
  • Your car needs a valid plate and tag, more than 2/32 inch of tread, working brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, seat belts and door handles, and a muffler that is not modified.
  • You can take the test up to 3 times, at least 1 day apart. After the third fail, wait 30 days. Each fail adds $4 to the fee that you pay when your license is issued.
  • Next step: practice on the free Oklahoma Class D practice test.

Oklahoma drive test: common questions

Can a parent ride with me on the Oklahoma drive test?

No. No pets or additional people can be in the car with you and the examiner. If you have a Learner Permit, a parent or guardian can come to the test site instead of an Affidavit of Driver Training, but the parent stays out of the car while you drive the route.

Is the Oklahoma drive test canceled in bad weather?

It can be. The examiner does not give the drive test when the examiner considers the roads slick or hazardous. If your test moves to a new day, check that your insurance is still valid and unexpired on that day, because the examiner asks for the insurance verification form before the test.

How do I check my tire tread before the Oklahoma drive test?

Use the penny test that the Service Oklahoma checklist suggests. Each tire needs more than 2/32 inch of tread, no cords showing and no bulges. A tire with only 1/32 inch of tread fails, even when no cords show. Try our free question on tire tread in Oklahoma.

Do I get my license the same day I pass the Oklahoma drive test?

Yes, a temporary one. When you pass a Service Oklahoma test and meet all the requirements, the examiner collects the fees and gives you a temporary paper license. The plastic card comes in the mail. For a teen, the fee to print and issue an Intermediate License is $25, plus $4 for each failed test.
