How to Get a Learner Permit in Oklahoma at 15 (Rules, Hours and Cost)

informational·how to guide·

Where the Oklahoma learner permit facts come from

The age, steps, fee and driving hours come from the Service Oklahoma learner permit page. The pass mark and online test rules come from the Service Oklahoma written test page. The driving-hours rule and the reasons to lose a permit come from Oklahoma law, 47 O.S. § 6-105. The 2024 age change comes from a Service Oklahoma news release, the work zone course time from a 2023 release, and the one-day retest wait from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. Other details come from the Service Oklahoma Student Driver, Intermediate License and Required Documents pages. This guide is current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) before you drive.

How to get an Oklahoma learner permit step by step

  1. 1
Sign up for driver education (age 15)

A 15-year-old must be enrolled in an approved Service Oklahoma driver education course. At 16, you can skip this step.

  2. 2
    Pass the written test

Take the 20-question test online at home or at a Service Oklahoma location. You can take it from age 14, but the permit starts at 15. A driver education completion certificate can waive the test. A Parent-Taught course does not.

  3. 3
    Prepare the documents

Bring one proof of identity, one proof of lawful presence, one proof of residency (two if you want a REAL ID) and your Social Security number (the card is not required). Also bring your driver education enrollment contract or completion certificate. Photocopies are not accepted. For the full list, see our guide to the documents and REAL ID for an Oklahoma learner permit.

  4. 4
Bring a parent or a signed form

If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must come with you. If a parent cannot come, bring a notarized Parent Authorization Form.

  5. 5
Visit an office and take the vision test

Go to a Service Oklahoma location or a Licensed Operator (tag agent). You take the vision test and meet an examiner during the visit.

  6. 6
Pay and take your temporary permit

You pay the $42.50 fee, plus $4.00 for each written test you failed. You leave with a temporary paper permit, and the plastic permit arrives by mail.

What counts as driver education for an Oklahoma permit?

Four kinds of course count: a school course, a nonpublic school course, a commercial driver training course, or a Parent-Taught Driver Education course certified by Service Oklahoma.
Each of them lets you get the permit at 15. The school and commercial courses give a completion certificate that can waive the written test. The Parent-Taught course does not waive it.

What is on the Oklahoma permit written test?

The written test has 20 questions on Oklahoma traffic laws, road rules, road signs and safe driving. To pass, you need 15 correct answers, as the Service Oklahoma written test page says. The test is in English only, and the Oklahoma Driver Manual says an oral test is given on request.
The online test gives you 60 minutes and costs nothing extra. Under 18, an adult must be with you for the identity check. You get two online tries, then you test in person. By law, you wait at least one day before you retest.

When can you drive with an Oklahoma learner permit?

It is between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., and a licensed driver 21 or older sits in the seat beside you
You can drive. Both conditions must be true on every drive. Try our free question on which practice drive the law allows at 6 a.m.
It is before 5 a.m. or after 10 p.m.
Do not drive, even with an adult beside you. A drive outside these hours breaks a permit restriction, and Service Oklahoma can suspend or cancel the permit for that.
You are 15, in a certified driver education course, and do not have a permit yet
You can drive only with a certified driver education instructor, under the Student Driver (No License) phase. A parent does not count as an instructor at this stage.

How much does an Oklahoma learner permit cost?

Service Oklahoma charges $42.50 to print and issue the permit, as of 2026. Each failed written test adds $4.00, and you pay it when you pass. For example, one failed test and then a pass means $42.50 + $4.00 = $46.50.
A written test at a Career Tech Testing Center costs $25.00, and you still visit a Service Oklahoma Licensing Office for the vision test and the permit.

What to do after you get your Oklahoma learner permit

  • Hold the permit for at least 180 days before the drive test. A traffic conviction restarts the 180 days from the conviction date.
  • Get 50 hours of practice, at least 10 of them at night, with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has had a license for at least 2 years. A parent certifies the hours on the Affidavit of Driver Training. Service Oklahoma does not accept driving logs.
  • Finish the free Oklahoma Work Zone Safe Course (about 45 minutes) if you are under 18.
  • Be at least 16 for the drive test. If you are under 16 1/2, bring proof that you finished driver education.
  • Sign up for the Sweet Sixteen Guarantee to get a drive test on your 16th birthday or your first eligible date. You can apply once you have the permit.
  • Read our guide to the Oklahoma intermediate license for the drive test and the $25.00 license fee.

Oklahoma learner permit: common questions

Can my parent teach me driver education in Oklahoma?

Yes. A Parent-Taught Driver Education course that Service Oklahoma has certified counts as driver education, so you can get the permit at 15. It does not waive the written test. To take the test before 16, you need the Parent-Taught Affidavit approval number and proof of purchase from the course provider.

Do I need a learner permit at 16 or 17 in Oklahoma?

Yes. If you are under 18, you need a learner permit before you can take a drive test. At 16 or 17, driver education is optional, but without it you must be at least 16 1/2 for the intermediate license. At 18 or older, a permit is not required for the drive test.

Can I drive alone with a learner permit in Oklahoma?

No. Even in the daytime window of 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., a licensed driver who is at least 21 must sit in the seat beside you on every drive. See our free question on who may supervise a 16-year-old at 7 p.m.

Can I lose my Oklahoma learner permit?

Yes. By law, Service Oklahoma can suspend or cancel a learner permit if you break its restrictions, give wrong or false information on the application, use a hand-held device while driving for a non-emergency, or break a traffic law. A traffic conviction also restarts your 180-day wait for the drive test.

Where do I get my Oklahoma learner permit after I pass the written test?

Go to a Service Oklahoma location or a Licensed Operator (tag agent). There you take the vision test, meet an examiner and pay the fee. If you pass the written and vision tests, you get a temporary paper permit that day. The plastic permit comes to you by mail.
