Utah Roundabout Rules: Who Yields and the 2026 Turn Signal Change
Who yields in a Utah roundabout, and do I have to signal?
You yield. Slow down as you approach, yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians, and enter only when it is clear. Traffic in the circle flows counterclockwise. Since May 6, 2026, Utah Code 41-6a-804(5) says you do not have to signal when you enter or exit a roundabout. Other turns and lane changes still need a signal for at least the last two seconds.
Where these rules come from
This guide uses the Utah Driver Handbook 2026, the Driver License Division's new legislation page and the current text of Utah Code 41-6a-804, as of 2026. It also uses the Driver License Division's written knowledge test page. Where the handbook and the law differ, this guide follows the law. Confirm the rules with the Utah Driver License Division (dld.utah.gov) before you drive.
What is a roundabout in Utah?
The Utah Driver Handbook defines a traffic roundabout as a circular intersection that flows counterclockwise. The roundabout rules are in Section 9, Rules of the Road, under "F. Roundabouts" on page 45. That part has three short rules: slow down, yield before you enter, and exit at your street. Before your Utah written knowledge test, learn these three rules and the 2026 signal change below.
How to drive through a Utah roundabout
- 1Slow down and look
Reduce your speed as you come to the roundabout. As at every intersection, search for traffic controls, oncoming and cross traffic, pedestrians, bicyclists and anything that blocks your view.
- 2Yield, then enter when it is clear
Let oncoming traffic and pedestrians go first. Enter the circle only when your way is clear.
- 3Drive around and exit at your street
Follow the circle counterclockwise and leave it at the street that you want.
Who yields at a Utah roundabout?
The driver who enters yields. The handbook's roundabout rule tells you to yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians before you go in. You must also yield to pedestrians who enter or are in a crosswalk, even an unmarked one. Never think that you have the right of way: look at the situation and put safety first. Yielding also decides who goes first at a Utah four-way stop.
Do I have to signal in a roundabout in Utah?
No. Utah Code 41-6a-804(5) says that you are not required to signal an intention to turn when you enter or exit a roundabout. This exception applies even though the rest of that section requires signals. The change came from HB 128 (Traffic Amendments), which took effect on May 6, 2026. The practice question on roundabout turn signals follows the new law.
Utah turn signal rules since May 6, 2026
| Situation | Signal rule in Utah Code 41-6a-804 |
|---|---|
| Entering a roundabout | No signal of intention to turn is required |
| Exiting a roundabout | No signal of intention to turn is required |
| Right or left turn anywhere else, such as into a driveway | Signal without a break for at least the last 2 seconds before the turn |
| Lane change | Signal without a break for at least the last 2 seconds before the lane change |
| Stop or sudden slowdown | Signal to the driver behind you when you have the opportunity |
Other Utah signal rules that still apply
- Do not turn, merge or change lanes until you can do it with reasonable safety and you have given the correct signal.
- Signal any time you pull to or from a curb.
- Signal with your signal lamps or with your hand and arm.
- Do not flash a signal to tell the drivers behind you that they can pass.
- Cancel the turn signal when the turn or lane change is done.

Utah roundabout rules: common questions
Can I get a ticket for not signaling in a roundabout in Utah?
Not for a missing signal when you enter or exit. Since May 6, 2026, Utah Code 41-6a-804(5) says that no signal of intention to turn is required there. Other violations of that signal law, for example no two-second signal before a lane change, are infractions.
Which way do you go around a roundabout in Utah?
Counterclockwise. A traffic roundabout is a circular intersection, and the traffic in it flows counterclockwise. Slow down as you come in, yield before you enter, then drive around the circle and leave at the street that you want.
When did Utah stop requiring a turn signal in roundabouts?
On May 6, 2026. HB 128 (Traffic Amendments) took effect on that day. It removed the requirement to signal an intention to turn when you navigate a roundabout. The 2026 Utah Driver Handbook lists HB 128 among its new laws for that year.
Do I have to stop for pedestrians at a Utah roundabout?
You must give them the right of way. The roundabout rule puts pedestrians next to oncoming traffic as the people you yield to before you enter. At any crosswalk, marked or unmarked, you yield to a pedestrian who steps in or is already crossing. Go in only when your way is clear.
What should I study about roundabouts for the Utah permit test?
All written knowledge test questions come from the Utah Driver Handbook, so study its roundabout part (Section 9, F, page 45): slow down, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians, and exit at your street. Also learn the 2026 change: no turn signal is required when you enter or exit a roundabout.
