Wisconsin Points for New Drivers: Double Points and GDL Extensions

informational·how to guide·

Where these rules come from

This guide uses the Wisconsin DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles, part of WisDOT) page on the point system, the DMV GDL questions page and Wisconsin Statutes s. 343.085. It also uses the DMV pages on GDL points, probationary licenses and adult sponsors, Wisconsin Statutes s. 343.32, sections Trans 101.02 and Trans 101.10 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, and the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook. The rules are current as of 2026. Confirm the rules with the Wisconsin DMV (wisconsindot.gov) before you drive.

How do double points work for a new driver?

If you hold an instruction permit or a probationary license, or you have no license, demerit points double on your second and each later conviction. This applies at any age.
The ticket shows only an estimated point value. The final conviction and your license type at that time set the real number, so a ticket that says 4 points can become 8 points on your record. Doubling does not apply to vehicle equipment violations under chapter 347 of the Wisconsin Statutes. The free practice question on double points for a probationary driver uses this rule.

Can a traffic safety course remove points?

Yes. An approved traffic safety course takes 3 points off your total. The courses are in person at technical colleges, and there are no approved online courses. You can use this reduction once in a three-year period. If you are already suspended for points and have 12, 13 or 14 points, the suspension may be released after the course.
A driver who is suspended only for points may be eligible for an occupational license. It allows up to 12 hours of driving a day and 60 hours a week, to and from work, school and household errands, such as a grocery store.

How does a ticket extend GDL restrictions?

For a driver under 18, the GDL restrictions apply for the first 9 months after the probationary license is issued. If one of these events happens while the restrictions apply, they extend by 6 more months, or until age 18 if that comes first: a conviction for a moving violation, a GDL restriction violation, or a suspension or revocation. Most offenses with demerit points count. Seat belt and child restraint violations count too, even with 0 points. A vehicle equipment violation of 2 or fewer points does not count alone. One incident gives only one extension.
The restriction period does not run while your license is suspended or revoked.

What to expect after a ticket

This is your first conviction with points
The points count at the regular value. If you are under 18 and the GDL restrictions still apply, most tickets extend them by 6 months, never past age 18.
You hold a permit or a probationary license, or no license, and you already have a conviction with points
The points double, unless the violation is a chapter 347 equipment violation. Check your total for each 12-month period.
Your violations in any 12-month period add up to 12 points or more
The violation dates count, also for tickets that are still pending. With 12, 13 or 14 points, a traffic safety course may release the suspension.
You are under 18 and the violation came in the 6 months before your first probationary license
The DMV cancels the license. Stay violation free for 6 months and apply again.

What is the penalty for breaking the GDL curfew or passenger limit?

A conviction for a GDL time, route or passenger violation carries 3 points. The forfeiture (the fine) is $50 for the first offense and $50 to $100 for each later offense. The same conviction extends your GDL restrictions by 6 months, or until age 18 if that comes first. The free practice question on driving after midnight on a probationary license shows a typical curfew case.

Can a ticket cancel a new license?

Yes, for a driver under 18. The DMV will not issue the first probationary license if the teen committed an offense with points in the 6 months before, in Wisconsin or in another state. Most vehicle equipment violations of 2 or fewer points do not count. If the DMV gets a conviction for a violation from that 6-month period after it issues the license, it cancels the license. The driver must then be 6 months violation free to apply again.

What a Wisconsin adult sponsor can do after a ticket

  • A Wisconsin driver under 18 needs an adult sponsor for a permit or a probationary license, with a few exceptions.
  • The sponsor accepts liability for damage that the minor causes while driving. A free practice question on what an adult sponsor accepts covers this duty.
  • The DMV sends the sponsor a notice of each conviction for a GDL curfew or passenger violation.
  • The sponsor can withdraw sponsorship at any time with form MV3118. Withdrawal cancels the license.
  • To get a new license, the minor and the sponsor go to a DMV customer service center, complete form MV3001 and pay a reinstatement fee.
  • To avoid that fee, the driver can surrender the license voluntarily with form MV3581 instead.

Key takeaways

  • Points double from the second conviction if you hold an instruction permit or a probationary license, or have no license. Chapter 347 equipment violations are the exception.
  • Twelve to 30 points in 12 months mean a 6-month suspension. More than 30 mean one year.
  • Under 18, most tickets extend your GDL restrictions by 6 months, never past age 18. A curfew or passenger violation also costs 3 points and a $50 forfeiture for a first offense.
  • A sponsor gets a notice of a GDL restriction conviction and can withdraw sponsorship at any time, which cancels the license.

Wisconsin new driver tickets: common questions

Does an out-of-state ticket count against a Wisconsin new driver?

Yes, in some ways. Wisconsin gives no points for a conviction from another state, but the conviction goes on your Wisconsin driver record. For a driver under 18 who still has GDL restrictions, an offense in another state that would carry points in Wisconsin extends the GDL restrictions. In the 6 months before a first probationary license, such an offense also stops the DMV from issuing the license.

Does a seat belt ticket give points in Wisconsin?

No. Failing to fasten a seat belt carries zero demerit points. But for a driver under 18 who still has GDL restrictions, a seat belt conviction extends those restrictions by 6 months, or until age 18 if that comes first. A child restraint violation has the same effect.

Can a parent take back a teen's license in Wisconsin?

Yes. A sponsor can withdraw sponsorship at any time with form MV3118, and the license is then canceled. A new license needs a reinstatement fee. If the teen surrenders the license voluntarily with form MV3581, the fee does not apply.

Will the Wisconsin DMV warn me before a points suspension?

If you sign up for eNotify, yes. The DMV sends a warning by email or text to subscribers who have 6 to 11 points in a 12-month period. The notice of a point suspension comes by USPS mail, and the suspension starts on the date that the DMV mails the order.

Do double points stop when I turn 18?

No. At 18 the GDL hour and passenger limits end, but you still hold a probationary license, so points double for each conviction after your first. A probationary license is issued to expire two years from your next birthday. If you get it at 16, it lasts until at least your 19th birthday.

How long do points stay on a Wisconsin driving record?

Most convictions can be removed from the record 5 years after the conviction date. Alcohol-related convictions stay on the record with no end date. While a conviction is on the record, its points still count when the DMV checks for 12 points in any 12-month period.
