Wisconsin Permit Test Cost, Retakes and Class D License Fees

informational·how to guide·

Where these fees and rules come from

The Wisconsin Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV, part of WisDOT) lists the amounts on its DMV fee page and the test rules on its knowledge test page. The question counts come from the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook, and the online test rules also come from the DMV online test form BDS348 and a DMV news release of March 20, 2025. All amounts are in U.S. dollars as of 2026, and statute sets all DMV fees. Confirm the rules with the Wisconsin DMV (wisconsindot.gov) before you drive.

What a new driver pays in total

A new driver who buys the permit ($35), passes the first road test ($15) and then buys the probationary license ($28) pays $78 in DMV fees. After the pass, you pay for the probationary license and all your road tests together. Each failed road test, late cancel or no-show adds $15, so one fail before the pass makes it $93. A card payment adds up to 2.35%, which is at most about $1.83 on $78. The regular license ($42.50) comes later.

Where the permit test is free and where it costs $10

At a DMV customer service center, the knowledge and highway signs tests cost nothing. All centers give the test except Milwaukee Downtown and Sauk City. The online test costs $10 per test, and the fee goes to the DMV's online test vendor. It is for students aged 15 to 17 who are enrolled in driver education, after the driver training school notifies the DMV. After an online pass, you bring the certificate to a DMV center to buy your permit. The online permit test at home guide covers how it works.

What happens when you fail the permit test

You fail a test at a DMV center
Retake it no sooner than the next day. Tests at a DMV center are free.
You fail the online test
Each new online try costs $10, and you can try online only once per calendar day. After 2 failed online tries, the online service sends you to a DMV service center for the next try.
You break a rule of the online test
The test counts as failed, you get no refund of the $10, and the try counts toward your limit.
You fail the same test 5 times in one year
Get special permission from DMV staff before you take the test again. Online tries count toward the 5, and only 2 of the 5 can be online.

What the two tests ask

The highway signs test has 15 questions, and you need 12 right (80%) to pass. The Class D knowledge test has 50 questions, and you need 40 right (80%). The knowledge test takes about 45 minutes. Both counts come from the Motorists' Handbook. To see how a score turns into a result, try the practice question on the highway signs test format, or the one on the knowledge test pass mark.

How the DMV takes payment

  • Cash is accepted only at DMV customer service centers. Do not mail cash.
  • If you pay by credit card, debit card, PayPal or Apple Pay, the DMV adds a convenience fee of up to 2.35% of the amount. The screen shows the fee before you finish.
  • Some online services take a bank payment (ACH) with no added fee.

Permit renewal, duplicate and late fees

The permit lasts 18 months. If you need more time, you can renew it for $35 for another 18 months. Once you have a license, a duplicate costs $14. A driver who does not renew the license by the birthday pays a $5 late fee on top of the usual license fee.

Key takeaways

  • The permit test is free at a DMV center. Online, it costs $10 per try for students aged 15 to 17 in driver education.
  • After a fail, retake the test the next day. Each test allows 5 tries in one year (only 2 online), then you need DMV staff permission.
  • A new driver pays $35 for the permit, $15 for each road test and $28 for the probationary license: $78 with one road test.
  • Card payments add up to 2.35%. Cash works only at DMV centers.

Wisconsin permit test fees: common questions

Can I drive as soon as I pay for my Wisconsin permit?

Yes, under the permit rules. After you pass the tests and pay the $35 permit fee at a DMV center, you leave with a driving receipt, and you can drive with it. You may drive only with a qualified person beside you. The permit card arrives by mail within 10 days, and the permit lasts 18 months.

Do I pay again if I fail the permit test at the DMV?

No. Tests at a DMV customer service center are free: the DMV fee table lists the knowledge and signs tests at $0. You can retake a test no sooner than the next day. Online tries are different: each one costs $10, pass or fail.

How many times can I take the Wisconsin permit test?

You can take the same test 5 times in one year, and only 2 of those tries can be online. After 5 fails, DMV staff must give you special permission before the next try. An online test that fails because a rule was broken also counts as a try.

Why does the online permit test cost $10 if the DMV test is free?

The $10 goes to the DMV's online test vendor, and the DMV still gives the test for free at its customer service centers. You pay $10 for each online test, pass or fail. If you break a rule of the online test, the test fails and you get no refund.

What does a Wisconsin driver license cost after the permit?

Every new driver, at any age, first gets a probationary license. It costs $28 and expires 2 years from your next birthday. Later, after you hold it for the required time and are at least 19, the original regular license costs $42.50 and lasts 8 years.
