At a four-way stop, you come to a full stop first. A moment later, a car on your right comes to a full stop. You both plan to go straight. Who should go first?
Two cars wait at perpendicular approaches to an all-way stop. A stopped first; B then stopped on the road to A’s right.
Correct answer: You, because you reached the intersection and stopped first.
Why
New Mexico law requires a driver at a stop sign to stop and then yield to any vehicle that has already entered the intersection or is close enough to be an immediate hazard. The law only says who must yield, so be ready to wait if another driver goes out of turn. Before you move, look left, right and across the intersection for pedestrians and make sure your path will stay clear. Do not enter unless you can get all the way through without stopping.
