Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
A vehicle ahead has stopped at a marked crosswalk and may be hiding a pedestrian. According to the MTO handbook, what should you do?
A blue car approaches a vehicle stopped before a marked crosswalk, where a pedestrian is partly hidden from the following driver.
Correct answer: Stop behind it and go only when the crossing is clear
Why
Do not pass the stopped vehicle; it may be yielding to a pedestrian hidden from your view. Stop behind it and proceed only when you have checked that the crossing and traffic ahead are clear. This is the MTO handbook’s crosswalk guidance. At an occupied pedestrian crossover, HTA section 140 adds specific duties to stop, not overtake a vehicle already stopped there, and wait until the pedestrian is off the roadway. Those crossover duties must not be mislabelled as the exact statutory rule for every marked crosswalk.
Verified against MTO Driver’s Handbook — Sharing the road with other road users · Sharing the road with pedestrians / Watch for all crosswalks: do not pass a stopped vehicle because a pedestrian may be crossing.
