Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
When practicable, what minimum side-to-side clearance must a motor-vehicle driver leave while overtaking a bicycle on an Ontario highway?
Blue car A passes helmeted cyclist B using a clear adjacent lane to the cyclist’s left. Both travel east. No clearance measurement or answer target is marked.
Correct answer: 1 metre
Why
Leave at least one metre, as nearly as may be practicable, and keep that clearance until you are safely past the bicycle. Measure between the motor vehicle’s extreme right side and the bicycle’s extreme left side, including projections and attachments such as mirrors and handlebars. Leave more space when needed. If you cannot pass safely, wait behind the cyclist.
