Passing target: 16 correct signs and 16 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
On a highway with a speed limit of at least 80 km/h and at least two clearly marked lanes in your direction, snowplows are working in a staggered echelon. Their plows and attachments occupy every available passing lane. What should you do?
Two realistic working snowplows are staggered across the two eastbound lanes. The upper left-lane plow leads the lower right-lane plow. A is well behind; both lanes are occupied by plows and attachments.
Correct answer: Stay well back and do not attempt to pass them.
Why
Stay well back and wait behind this occupied formation. On a highway with a speed limit of 80 km/h or more, clearly marked lanes and at least two lanes in your direction, HTA 148.1 prohibits overtaking an echelon snowplow unless the overtaking lane is entirely clear of the plow, its attachments and blade. No lane is clear here. Ontario’s winter-driving guidance also advises drivers to wait behind working snowplows.
Verified against Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 · Driving near snowplows
