Your car does not have antilock brakes. On an icy road you brake to stop, and the wheels lock. The car slides straight ahead and does not respond when you steer. What should you do?
A neutral footwell shows an unpressed brake pedal at the left and accelerator at the right. The card gives the situation: on ice, the wheels have locked and the car has no antilock brakes. Neither pedal is selected.
Correct answer: Ease off the pedal slightly, then reapply it just short of lockup.
Why
On snow and ice, low traction can make your stopping distance 200 feet or more, even at 20 mph. Locked front wheels cannot steer, so the car goes straight however you turn the wheel. With antilock brakes the method is different: press firmly, keep your foot down, and let the system prevent lockup. The best defense is a slow, steady speed that avoids hard braking.
